FEATURED THIS WEEK AT BRIE & BLEU -
Colleen McNerney - our little old cheese monger - has made her selection for this week:
Halloumi Cheese usually $8 a packet at Brie & Bleu is $6 a packet this week.
For centuries a staple in the diet of the captivating mediterranean island nation of Cyprus, Halloumi has now gone beyond these borders to be loved worldwide.
Traditionally it is made by a women in the village, from a mixture of sheep's and goats' milks. Every few days, once sufficient milk has been collected, it is heated in a large cauldron, and then rennet is added to start the curdling process. Once the curds are set into a soft cheese they are cut and removed from the whey and pressed. The halloumi is then re-cooked, which results in its firm, almost rubbery texture. Whilst still warm the cheeses are sprinkled with a mixture of salt and dried mint and folded and stored in brine.
Combining the texture of mozzarella with the briny moisture of feta, Halloumi is easily one of the world's most versatile cheeses. Instead of melting when cooked Halloumi browns beautifully, especially when grilled. Alternatively, this lively 100% pure sheep's milk cheese can be served fresh in a salad or sandwich. The versatility of halloumi is such that it can be used in pies and pasties, it can be cooked with chicken or with fish, or grated and served with pasta. Halloumi is excellent with beer or wine and can be served at any meal of the day.
Enjoy an additioanal 10% discount when pairing with a nice Sauvignon Blanc such as The Crossings from New Zealand purchased at Thames River Wine and Spirits.

THIS WEEK AT BRIE & BLEU -
The featured cheese of the week is Agour at $20/lb is $18/lb this week. This authentic Ossau-Iraty-Brebis-Pyrenees is made in Basque area from pure sheep's milk. Brebis, of course, is French sheep and the sheep cheeses of this region in particular are some of the oldest in production. The Basques insist that their cheeses are around 4000 years old and often call them ardinasa, meaning "ewe or local cheese" in the local dialect.
The Agour Company, located next to Baigura Mountain in the heart Basque country.
This artisan Producer is committed to providing cheese of the highest quality and according to strict rules of tradition.
About 1000 shepherds from around the village of Helette provide milk daily. Generations of shepherds continue to breed small flocks of the Manech breed, recognized by their red or black head and thick wool. Some of the AOC rules include that milk production must be done in the Basque Country from local herds; milk must be transformed within 48 hours after milking; only natural rennet maybe used and the resulting flavor and texture must adhere to regular inspection experts. This cheese is firm in texture with a rich, aromatic and nutty aftertaste. For an additional 10% off the cheese pair with a nice Prendo Pinot Grigio purchased at Thames River Wine and Spirits.
WINE TASTING
Friday - August 4 - 6-9 p.m. - No Charge
1 - Vina Robles 2004 - Viogner - $17 - http://www.vinarobles.com/vina_robles.html
This wine is sold out at the winery itself - We managed to get our hands on through a number of clandestine meetings and a crisp bank note or two pressed into the proper palm. Seriously - This wine is fresh and bright with notes of tropical fruits such as pineapple and hints of citrus peel, orange blossom and ginger. It is broad, creamy and full bodied on the palate yet remains fresh and well balanced. Notes of citrus and tropical fruits, particularly pineapple are complemented by a long clean finish. Great with summer menus, please give this a try you will be surprised. Limited, first come, first served.
2 - Ahlgren Vineyard 2001 Semillon - $21 -
Dexter and Val Ahlgren make fabulous wine. Robert Parker says: "A tiny winery - A perennial over achiever - Talented Winemaking - Extremely High Quality - Usually among the best of the vintage." - Wow does it get any better than that?
This is what we say: Aromatic, bright Semillon has a wonderful bouquet with hints of spice. Classic, clean, crisp flavors, fine balance. Long finish, barrel fermented. Dry. This wine is like magic with Crab Cakes - and to prove it here is Val Ahlgrens personal recipe -http://www.ahlgrenvineyard.com/crab_cakes.htm A great wine for the summer - try it.
3 - Juan Gil - 20004 Monastrell - $16 - Spain
Many of you have been waiting for the return of this wine - It is one of the best values in the store - and even less than before.
Many of you know that I have a soft spot for this particular winery - We spent a full day eating, drinking, and crawling around on our hands and knees with the owner and wine maker himself at the vineyard. These people know how to LIVE baby! The vineyards are located about 90 minutes from Valencia Spain in Jumilla. This is a hot dusty area that Americans first learned about because Clint Eastwood shot some of those early westerns that marked the beginning of his career. Take a look at a couple of photos that we took on location - scroll down just below the pictures of Mario Batali - http://thamesriver.com/wine/photos.html
About The Wine: 100% Monastrell grapes. Aged a full year in french oak. It has a deep rich color - ripe fruit flavors and a very balanced, long spicy finished. Serve it with grilled meats and hearty cheeses.
Please try it on friday night - it is a house favorite.
4 - Chateau Muscar - 1998 - $45
The grapes for this wine are handpicked as the sun rises across the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon.
Viticulture in Lebanon was introduced 6000 years ago by the Phoenicians who traded their wines throughout the Mediterranean and planted the vine in southern Europe. In antiquity, wine was exported from the Lebanese ports of Byblos, Tyre and Saida with Egypt being their first regular customer. Evidence of this may still be seen today in countless Egyptian inscriptions and paintings. The Bible is full of references to the wine of Canaan which is located today in southern Lebanon. According to the bible, the Hebrews had brought home a bunch of grapes so big that it took the strength of two men to carry it. This is a remarkable red wine that deserves some attention. You can almost taste the history that is inside the bottle - don't miss it on Friday.
Thanks to everyone for your support, we appreciate it.
We are having lots of fun this summer and it all revolves around your input and participation we couldn't do it without you.

The cheese of the week at Brie & Bleu:
Coastal Cheddar cheese. It is the summer and time for sitting by the coast with some cheese, crackers and wine, which can be purchased at Thames River Wine and Spirits for an additional 10% off the cheese. The cheese is ususally $9/lb but $7/lb this week.
And for the additional 10% pair the cheese with a nice Sauvignon Blanc such as Silverstone.
Now, a little history about the cheese: the Farmhouse Cheddar has been made in the West Country since the 16th century, although the unique cheddaring process has been exported all over the world. Ford Farm cheese is produced at the Ashley Chase Estate in Dorset from milk produced on their own and local West Country farms. This unique partnership has produced some of the finest tasting cheeses in England. All Ford Farm Cheeses are traditionally handmade by a team of dedicated and skilled cheesemakers, guaranteeing an authentic, full farmhouse flavor. The cheeses are all wonderful, all handmade varietals, including Wensleydale, Cheshire, and Double Gloucester. The coastal country of Dorset provides an idealic setting allowing cool breezes and moisture to nourish the soil and create lush grasses on which Holstein Frisian cows graze. These cows supply rich, creamy milk which in turn enables the suppier to create rich, creamy complex cheddar.
Coastal is a Farmhouse Cheddar with one notable exception; the cheese maker starts with swiss cultures giving the cheese a wonderful earthiness. As the name suggests, this cheese has sea salt crystals added during the maturing process to give it a unique sea flavor. It is billed as "rugged mature cheddar" and that seems a perfect description. Aged only 15 months, Coastal Cheddar has a perfect flavor. Great as a stand alone cheese, or with sliced apples and grapes. Coastal will go well with a fine beer or white wine.

WINE TASTING
PLEASE JOIN US- Friday July 28 - 6-9 p.m. - No Charge
1 - Zeni Pinot Grigio Ramato "Vigneto Fontane," $17
The northeastern Italian regions of Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia were historically referred to as the "Tre Venezie"(three Venices), and represent the vast chunk of territory once associated with the great city of Venice. Today, these regions are more politically distinct, but their wines converge on the tables of Venice, where the incomparable array of seafood - cuttlefish in their ink; scampi (shrimp) dressed in olive oil and lemon juice; flaky branzini (sea bass) baked in salt crust - is perfectly complemented by the Tre Venezie¹s minerally, crisp, fragrant white wines.
This wine is a classic of the Tre Venezie: A powerful pinot grigio with a slight pink tinge due to some skin contact during fermentation.
This is the kind of wine you'll see in Venice all the time but rarely does it make it Stateside. (the term "ramato" means "coppery," in reference to the coppery color of the wine due to the skin contact). Give this one a try - you might decide to keep a case around the house at all times.
2 - Anton Bauer - Wagram Cuvee 9 - $21
Along the Danube River lie the hills of the Wagram. Its south-facing slopes with terraced vineyards, loess soil, and exceptional microclimate are responsible for producing high quality grapes. Ecological cultivation, bio-fertilization and yield reduction are necessary to guarantee the best possible harvest, and modern cellar techniques are used to ensure that this high quality ends up in the bottle.
The No. 9 denotes this is the ninth vintage of this rich and sexy blend comprised of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, Cabernet and Merlot aged for 15 months in French oak. It is juicy and complex and absolutely delicious with violet & licorice aromas, layers of dark berry fruit flavors and spice with a smooth silky finish. Pair with beef, duck, grilled pork, tuna and rich red sauces.
3 - Cantina Parroco Barbaresco - $28
The third most collected wine of Italy is Barbaresco. It is commonly referred to as Barolo’s younger sibling: where Barolo is king, Barbaresco is queen. The later is similar in style, though the wine is generally less full-bodied and the regulations demand less ageing in a cask as a result. The zone of Barbaresco is a tiny area in the Langhe, where the land is divided among a very small number of producers who extract wonderfully reliable wines from the land. Though still in the shadows of its neighbor, this wine can certainly stand on its own merits. Made completely from Nebbiolo, Barbaresco is a complex wine with gripping tannins yet displays impressive elegance.
4 - Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - $50 - http://www.flowerswinery.com/
This is a house favorite of ours. When we need to send a gift or acknowledgment from The Greenery - this is one of the bottles we always reach for. Great fresh fruit aromas of cherry, plum, and raspberry are followed by hints of sandalwood, mineral, and leather. This wine offers crisp acidity upon entry unfolding with flavors of plum, raspberry and spice. Tannins are supple creating a long, soft finish. This is a beautiful wine, it makes a great gift or a nice treat for yourself - please try it.
We are having a lot of fun this summer - thanks so much for your support we appreciate it - and we have a lot more in store for you before the season is over.

• An Evening in Paris was being hosted at the Hygenic - Participants strolled through the botanical gardens in the Art Park while enjoying a basket of French goodies, including wine, cheese and a baguettes, and works by local artists were on display.
• An evening of White Linen & Cold Drinks - hosted by our own Jim Morrison was happening at the Thames Club.
If you are still waiting for something to happen downtown - it is happening.
• Thanks to everyone that attended an evening of vintage rum & cigars at Brie & Bleu last Thursday.
• Thanks to our own Anne Haviland for producing yet another beautiful wine dinner last Wednesday - fabulous! Recipes are available on the website.
THIS WEEK:
BRIE & BLEU -
Our very own cheese monger, Colleen McNerney, has brought back a favorite this week - by popular demand.
The cheese of the week is - a Smoked Jarlsberg usually at $10/lb - this week is $8/lb.
A little history about the cheese is in 1830, the Swiss came to Norway’s Jarlsberg and Laurvig County (known as Vestfold County today) to teach the Norwegians to make cheese. These foreign master cheese makers were famous for making cheese with holes. There was active production in Norway until 1832. The cheese disappeared but the tale of its delicious taste was still in memory.
In 1956, the academic community at the Agricultural University of Norway at Ås undertook the task of reviving the cheese recipe from 1830. The new cheese was named Jarlsberg after the county, where the earlier version had been made at the beginning of the 19th century. Jarlsberg is famous around the world for its distinctive sweet and nutty taste and large, round holes. Jarlsberg is available in rinded and rindless varieties and is ideal for cheeseboards and as a topping for salads and hot dishes. Smoked Jarlsberg characteristic taste si made by being dipped in a special smoky liquid. It gives the cheese a brown-coloured surface and a piquant, smoky taste. Smoked Jarlsberg is an excellent sandwich filling and is a taste sensation in many hot and cold dishes.
Save an additional 10% off the cheese when purchased with a Sauvignon Blanc such as Santa Rita Reserva from our Thames River Wine and Spirits located next door.
Cheers,
Colleen
BEER ME DADDY!
Beer tasting Thursday July 20 - 5-8 p.m. - No Charge
Kristin Webers has reached into our vintage cooler - did you know it was made in 1954?
Did you know that it proudly served at a New London landmark for over a half century before we rescued it from a dumpster?
Our 1954 Peerless refrigerator was in continuous use at "Patsy's" market until the new ownership renovated the building.
We had to save it - we had no choice.
ANYWAY
Kristen has reached into the cooler and this is her line up for Thursday - AND - she wants to assure everyone that a beer dinner is very close to being announced - please stay tuned, she is working hard to make it right. - Please ask her about it on Thursday - she needs to know that we care.
1 - Brahma Desde 1888 - http://www.brahma.com.br/sitebrahma/
From Rio de Janeiro, this beer claims "no aftertaste." While that's not wholly true it is a very light beer for summer with a hint of papaya.
Corona beware! Some people actually call this a great belly-button beer. At least that's what Kristin calls it - But Perhaps I've said too much already.
2 - Sapporo - http://www.sapporousa.com/
This is a clean, crisp, beer, with hints of citrus and some herbal flavors. The original Japanese rice lager.
Many of you may have tried this beer at the Singapore Grill - Across from BlockBuster Video - heading out of town towards Waterford Stop & Shop. And if you STILL have not eaten there you need to make the trip.
Be sure to ask for "Sonny" - he is the owner and will take care of you.
3 - Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout-$4/550mL
Sweet dark fruit and oatmeal, chocolate, and roasted malt aroma.
A true favorite of stout lovers and a converter of those who decided that stout was too heavy.
4 - Royal Extra-The Lion Stout-$8/6pk - http://caribbeer.com/
From Trinidad - The brewing of beer in Trinidad and Tobago was inherited from the British. The first commercial brewery was founded just after World War 1 although there had been legislation as early as August 1899 concerning the regulation of brewing.
Royal Extra stout is a rich, dark, fairly sweet stout. In Trinidad, Royal Extra is immediately identifiable as the “black bottle” drink, embodying the personality of the “lion” – majestic, powerful and potent. Among the emerging young adult male and female drinkers in Trinidad, Royal Extra is the stout that they identify with for confidence, strength and individuality - I wonder what they think about Bud Light?

Friday July 21 - 6-9 p.m. - No Charge
1 - Domaine Paul Blanck - Pinot Gris - $20 - http://www.skurnikwines.com
This is everything that straightforward, dry Pinot Blanc should be. Rife with both zesty citrus and rich fruits, it’s a clear-voiced tenor of a Pinot Blanc, and a superb value. Fish, sauerkraut, Pâtés, poultry, all great for serving with this wine.
2 - Gruet Rosé - $18 - http://www.gruetwinery.com/
Yes it is TRUE - this wine is from New Mexico - please stop snickering long enough to try this - you will be surprised - honest.
This nearly garnet Rosé, is aged 24 months en tirage. It has a lovely, bright floral bouquet with hints of strawberry, raspberry, and cherry. On the palate, it is rich and fruity in a dry, Brut style. The flavor of berries continues on the palate, revealing more strawberry, raspberry, cherry. This sparkler is lots of fun and very festive, but production is limited to 5000 cases per year, so don’t miss out!
3 - Root 1 - Chile - Cabernet - $12 - http://www.root1wine.com/
All of the vines for Root:1 are ungrafted from historic 19th century Bordeaux cuttings. Do not miss trying this wine on Friday.
While phylloxera has devastated most viticultural areas around the globe, forcing vineyard owners to graft phylloxera-resistant American rootstock to their vines, Chile has remained unaffected. Surrounded by natural barriers to pests and diseases, the Andes Mountains to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, with the Atacama Desert to the north and frozen masses of Antarctic ice to the south, Chile exists as a virtual Eden.
Vines continue to thrive on their own rootstock, and much of the country’s vineyards can be traced back to the original rootstock imported from historic French appellations. These ideal grape growing conditions have resulted in vines being treated with minimal pesticides, and the purity from root to grape results in a truly magnificent wine.
Deep ruby color, intense aromas of red fruits and cassis, with some hints of vanilla. Well balanced with soft tannins and good structure.
Abundance of red fruit flavors like cherry and plums, with a complex and long finish. It matches well with mature cheese and grilled meats.
4 - Allegrini Palazzo della Torre - Valpolicella
Allegrini represents the highest expression of Valpolicella wines, with passion for elegance, commitment to excellence and a long heritage in refined winemaking style. A smooth, full-bodied cru made in an innovative ripasso style, sacrificing its DOC status by replacing the Molinara grape with Sangiovese. 70% of the grapes picked are vinified immediately. The remaining 30% are left to dry until the end of December when they are vinified and then re-fermented with the wine from the fresh grapes. The result is higher alcohol content, rounder style, lower acidity and more extraction than a Valpolicella Classico. A classic accompaniment to grilled or roasted vegetable or meat dishes.
As always - thanks for your continued support - we appreciate it.
It is always fun on Friday night - we hope you can find the time to join us.
It's fun, informal and a great way to start your weekend.

This Week at Brie & Bleu -
Colleen McNerney has selected a very interesting cheese this week.
The featured cheese for the week is Crater Lake Blue, which is a cow's milk. Crater Lake Blue is the most robust blue cheese made by Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon. It is a complex blend of molds from Rogue Creamery, as well as Roquefort and Danish Blue recipes. The vibrant blue-green color of Crater Lake is mirrored in the veins of this blue. The depth of flavor is rich and bold with a sweet and buttery finish. The cheese is usually $19/lb but is $17/lb this week at Brei and Bleu. The cheese pairs well with a white port wine such as Porto Quinta Santa Eufemia. The port is available at Thames Wine and Spirits - enjoy an additional 10% off the cheese when purchased at the same time as the port.

Wine Tasting Friday July 14 - 6.p.m. - No Charge
1 - Valdesil - Galicia Spain- $10
The wine producing region of Valdeoras lies in Spain’s northwest corner in the region of Galicia. Much of Valdeoras lies just north of Portugal.
As is the story with much of viticultural Europe, vines are thought to have been first planted in Galicia by the conquering Romans who brought vines with them from the East. A delicate aroma of apricots is followed in the mouth by smooth, glyceriny, peachy flavours and an agreeably clean finish.
2 - Miguel Torres - Santa Digna - Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé - $9 - http://www.torres.es/eng/asp/index.asp
Compared to more traditional rosés, the Chilean Santa Digna is a wine of unmistakable personality: original, young and nonconformist. Its stylish charm is the result of careful vinification of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety, during which only a short contact is allowed between grape skins and juice. Delicious with cured sausages, meat pies and many pasta dishes. The perfect wine for sweet-and-sour Chinese dishes.
3 - Domaine de Monpertuis - Cotes du Rhone - 2004 - $16
The Domaine de Monpertuis has been in the hands of the Jeune family for several generations. Jeune has the remarkable good fortune of having a majority of the vineyards planted to vines between 60 and 110 years of age. The remaining vineyards generally are between 20 and 60 years old. Everything is hand picked. Dark red. Baked cherry, chocolate and spices on the nose. Broad and rich but juicy, with mouthcoating flavors of cherry, raspberry, pepper and spices - as we like to say - Yummy.
4 - Mas De Daumas Gassac - 2004 - $40 http://www.daumas-gassac.com/us/bienvenue.php
This is the wine that is known as "The Grand Cru Of The Languedoc"
It was fabulous when we had it at the Restaurant Du Village - and it has been praised by virtually every important critic in the wine business.
For example - Robert Parker calls it "Exceptional" - "One of the Ten Best Wines In The World" - Michael Broadbent
It will age gracefully for 20 years with no problem - We know this first hand - because we recently had the good fortune of opening a bottle of 1986 at a friends house. - (Thank you Hank). Take the time to stop by this Friday and try this wine - it will knock your socks off.
Thanks again for all of your support - we really appreciate it.

The featured cheese of the week is ..... a Dutch Goat Gouda usually at $16/lb is $14/lb this week at Brei & Bleu. Dutch goat cheese is a rarity, except, that is, for Goat Gouda. A few entrepreneurial Dutchmen discovered that Gouda, the cheese people most commonly associate with Holland, could be made from goat's milk as well. Goat Gouda has proven wildly popular in Europe and is starting to turn heads here in the States too. This satiny, bright white cheese is now manufactured by several Dutch cheese producers. If you like goat cheese, we strongly suggest you try this tangy, satiny, mouth-watering gem made from pasteurized goat's milk. A mild, and somewhat nutty flavor with a soft and slightly creamy texture is excellent for fondues and may be served with your favorite red wine such as Silverstone Cabernet purchased next door at Thames River Wine and Spirits for an additional 10% off the cheese.

Plaudits to Charlotte Hennegan and Fred Argilagos of Thames River Wine and Spirits Shop and Brie and Bleu. The two won an award from Connecticut Main Street for the imaginative ways in which they redesigned storefronts and a cellar on Bank Street.
The wine shop cellar resembles an old stone dungeon made handsome with outcrops of granite and wooden whiskey casks and wine bins used imaginatively, along with copper piping constructed as a rail on stairs leading to the basement.
The adjoining stores have helped create a new feeling along lower Bank Street. They join the rejuvenated Hygienic art gallery, with its attendant gardens and sculpture, and, next door, the Bulkeley House, which has an outdoor bar and restaurant deck alongside a grassy knoll with multiple tables.
The businesses and gallery are bringing life to Bank Street.

• Thanks to so many people for the kind words when we received Connecticut's Main Street Award - complete with an Official Statement signed by the Governor for "Best Adaptive Re-use of a Building" 2006. Governor Jodi Rell Gives Honor To Thames River Wine & Spirits
NL Wine, Cheese Shops Honored With State Main Street Award
By Michelle Mileham, Special To The Day
Published on 6/20/2006 in Business » Business Local
New London — Thames River Wine and Spirits and Brie and Bleu, both located on Bank Street, were honored Monday night by Connecticut Main Street Center, a nonprofit organization that helps communities revitalize their downtowns.
At the organization's 10th annual meeting at the Crocker House, the two local businesses, both owned by Charlotte Hennegan and Fred Argilagos, received the award for Adaptive Re-use of a Building. Wine and Spirits and Brie and Bleu took over the building they occupy in 2004. It houses a two-story granite basement that has been turned into an upscale wine cellar. It was described by Penny Parsekian, executive director of New London Main Street, as having “a Tuscan atmosphere.”
“They (Hennegan and Argilagos) gave that location and that building a rebirth,” said John Simone, president and chief executive officer of Connecticut Main Street. “Wine and Spirits and Brie and Bleu helped downtown New London become great again.”
Before the meeting, Hennegan said she couldn't take all the credit for the revitalization of the building.
“It is thanks to the people who owned the building hundreds of years before us who didn't ruin such a great building,” Hennegan said. “I am very thankful for getting this award, which is a first for us.”
New London also received two awards Monday night, for Volunteer Recruitment Effort and Public Relations and Organizational Communications.
New London's Main Street Center is one of 35 such groups in Connecticut participating in the Main Street project. Connecticut Main Street is part of the National Main Street project, which encourages the preservation of historic districts across America and restoring prosperity to downtowns and neighborhood businesses.

This week at Brie & Bleu - Our own Colleen McNerney has gotten her hands on a much requested favorite-
The featured cheese this week - It has returned ...Mirabo with walnuts a cow's milk cheese ususally $14/lb is $12/lb this week at Brie & Blue. Mirabo Walnut, a sophisticated soft ripened cheese, has been mastered by Kaserei Champignon of Bavaria, Germany. Its exclusive blossom shape, with find while mold, gives mirabo its unmistakable appearance. The pate of this cheese is a soft and creamy delight, and the finest crushed walnuts, speckled throughout, produce a wonderfully mild and nutty flavor. For an additional 10% off the cheese, purchase with fruity, full-scented white wine such as Vin Robles or a red such as Haymen Hill Pinot Noir.
BEER TASTING - Thursday June 22 - 5-8 p.m.
Regular fans will agree there has been a snag or two getting the weekly beer tasting back on track.
The Good News Is - Our own Kristin Weber has stepped up to the plate -
She has put together a fine list for Thursday AND will be taking over as the President of our Beer Division.
Kristin is also making plans to upgrade the beer tasting in signifacant ways - please ask her all about it on Thursday - There are BIG changes coming - including the introduction of food pairings.
1 - Lindemans Framboise $6/12oz. - http://www.merchantduvin.com/
Long before hops were common in most beers, various fruits and vegetables were used to season beers. The acidity of Lambic beers blends perfectly with raspberries. Lindemans lambics were introduced to the United States in 1979, making them the first lambics marketed in U. S. history. Incredible aroma, delicate raspberry with a lot of fruity acidity.
2 - Hoegaarden White Beer $9/6pk. - http://www.inbev.com/brands/2__0__0__legal.cfm
Hoegaarden Brewery (pronounced whogarden) was founded by Pierre Celis in Hoegaarden in Flanders (yes, the medieval village). The witbier (white beer) reached a revival period in the sixties when he created a beer with the traditional ingredients of water, yeast, wheat, hops, coriander and dried Curacao orange peel.
3 - Franziskaner Bavarian Wheat Beer $8/6pk. - http://www.franziskaner.com/
This is a Wheat Beer, brewed exclusively from alpine water, malt, yeast and hops according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. This unfiltered Wheat Beer has a cloudy appearance. A crisp, distinctive, extremely refreshing taste with a hint of clove.
4 - McEwan's Scotch Ale $10/6pk. - http://www.scottish-newcastle.com/
Scotch ale, is much higher in gravity. It is often called "strong Scotch ale," or by its common nick-name of "Wee Heavy." It is very rich, strong, and sweet. A perfect desert beer.
WINE TASTING - Friday June 23 - 6-9 p.m. - No Charge
1 - Copain Les Printemps Rose - California- $15
We continue to feature one rose each week because too many people still have questions about it. The most common thing people say is: "I don't like sweet wine." All rose is not sweet. They are fantastic with food and should be a regular addition to your summer table - try it.
From Wells Guthrie’s top single-vineyard sources in Mendocino County, this is made from a saignée of 80% Pinot, 20% Syrah.
The wine is drained off the skins of the pinot and syrah at different times during cold soak once appropriate color has been achieved. It is then fermented in neutral barrels using “native yeasts.” It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
2 - Castillo De Monseran - $7 - http://www.sanvalero.com
This is a wine that should always be on your shelf. It is very drinkable and the quality is amazing for the price. All of your friends will think you paid much more for it. Rich, ripe and spicy. Serve it with tomato and goat cheese salads or grilled meats. At this price you will want it by the case.
3 - Clos De Los Siete - $16 - Argentina - http://www.monteviejo.com/
These wine growers are lucky enough to not have to use pesticides, due to the very arid climate which prevents the development of grapevine diseases. But the great particularity of the Clos de los Siete is the process of winemaking using gravity. From pressing to bottling, and including the pouring of wine from vats to aging barrels, the entire process depends on gravity, using the weight of the raisin for downward movement in order to avoid using pumps. Deep color and smooth with lots of sweet vanillary oak. Blueberry and cassis. Supple with layers of chewy black fruits. There is a touch of green pepper underneath it all. Rich and hedonistic - superb for money.
4 - El Pundito - Rioja - $54 - Rated 95 points by WS.
This is the blockbuster for the week. Only 100 cases imported and we are lucky enough to have a good supply.
So thick it's almost syrupy, this red never loses its balance. Dense and thick, with blackberry, currant, mineral, dark chocolate and espresso flavors that build on each other through the long finish--yet it remains graceful and brings you back for another sip - and another, and another....
As you stroll around town on Friday for the art, music and food - stop in and give this a try.

Thanks for your support - we appreciate it.
Be sure to say hello when you stop in - we love to get your feed back.
Please join us. It's fun, informal and a great way to start your weekend.

This Week At Brie & Bleu - www.brieandbleu.com
The featured cheese this week is Hudson Valley Camembert a soft ripened cheese made in Old Chatham, New York by the Old Chatham Sheepherding Company. The sheepherding company has the largest flock of dairy sheep in the country to date with 1200 sheep. The animals graze openly on sprawling green pastures in the Hudson Valley. This award winning bloomy, soft-ripened, camembert style cheese is made with a combination of Old Chatham's sheep milk and BGH free cow's milk from a neighboring herd. The cheese comes in a unique square shape. The creamy pate gives way to clean flavors by balancing the two milks, leaving behind mellow, soft flavors for a lush, buttery finish on the palate.
The cheese is usually $8 a square but this week $6.
Pair with a nice Chardonnay such as Silverstone or a Pinot Noir such as Hayman Hill Pinot Noir - Take an additional 10% off the cheese when purchased at the same time as the wines - from Thames River Wine and Spirits.
This Thursday - Beer Tasting & Food Paring - 5-8 p.m. - No Charge
See you there!
FRIDAY - WINE TASTING PLEASE JOIN US - Friday June 16 - 6-9 p.m. No Charge
1 - Varaschin Prosecco Brut Rosé - $12
Varaschin's wine-firm was founded in S. Pietro di Barbozza around 1930 by Matteo Varaschin.
This is a Brut Rosé - We have been drinking this for 3 or 4 Sundays in a row now. Just like the Nino Franco Prosecco it is a great bottle to open as you grab that cook book off of the shelf or tear the recipie out of the magazine section at a quarter to twelve. It gets the juices going - and allows you to come up with a plan for the rest of the day. It is great with food. It is aromatic and elegant with soft floral and fruit notes - It is NOT a bottle of sweet fizzy wine - I promise.
2 - Domain Ferret Pouilly-Fuisse - $30
The Ferret family began the domaine in 1760 - they have a lot of practice producing good wine and this is one of their favorites. Our summer menus include a lot of seafood and lighter fare and this is a perfect choice to pair with them. If your lucky enough to be invited to one of those lush garden parties - the kind where everyone is laughing, people are wearing shoes without socks, and the air is filled with the sounds of summer - the hosts are probably serving a wine just like this. Delicious with moderately concentrated baked apple and vanilla flavors and a soft mineral finish - accept our invitation - please give this one a try
3 - Parker Station Pinot Noir - $14 - http://www.fessparker.com/index.htm
Do any of you remember Fess Parker - he played Davy Crockett on TV way back when in the late fifties and early sixties.
He also appeared in about 35 other movies and was a favorite of Walt Disney - Well Fess did not spend all his pay on saloon girls and cheap whiskey - he would never drink cheap whiskey. Instead he started making wine. This is what Robert Parker said recently about the wines:
“…no one has better vineyards or has pumped more money into specific terroirs than Fess Parker.
The quality of his wines goes from strength to strength, yet they remain realistically priced. Consumers take note. Fess Parker and his winemaking team (son, Eli, leads the pack) continue to raise the quality to impressive levels." Robert Parker, Jr.
So, join us on Friday and give this one a try - wear your coon skin hat if you can find it.
4 - Klinker Brick - $18 - http://www.klinkerbrickwinery.com
It is hardly a secret that the most rich, intense and multi-dimensional zinfandel tends to be produced from “Old Vines”, vines that are at least 50 years old. “Old Vines”, also known as Ancient Vines, Gnarly vines, Old Timer Vines, Old World Vines or Old Twisted Vines are in decline, mature in age, with low vigor. They tend to have fewer clusters of grapes with smaller berry size, yielding more intense sugars, color and concentration of flavors, producing wines that are generally better balanced with more body and structure. This wine is a perfect example. This wine resembles a French Syrah with ripe berry aromas with chocolate overtones. This wine has excellent balance and a smooth, lingering finish. - If your a fan of that friendly, smooth, approachable "Zin" character - try this. Oh yeah, remember, if you can find that old vine-skin hat please wear it to the tasting.
Thank you all for making it so much fun. We have a big summer season planned and we will keep you posted along the way. Remember, we update the calendar of events often - so check it often for changes.
Please Join Us - It's fun, informal and a great way to learn about wine.

This week at Brie & Bleu- Remember the new menu is in full swing and here is the featured item for this week:
Saint Nectaire at $12/lb is $10/lb this week at Brie & Bleu. This cheese from Auvergne takes its name from Sainte Nectaire, a small mountain village named for the 17th century leading family, Sennecterre. Made from pasteurized cow's milk and traditional rennet, the cheese is mild and fruity with a soft, meaty texture with occasional tiny eyes. A whole cheese is about 8 inches in diameter and weighs about 4lbs. The rind is pale pink with a covering of pale gray mold. St. Nectaire is in the washed-rind category of cheese, yet is almost the opposite of Limburger cheese which you will also taste in this shipment. If you are yearning for a creamy, milky cheese, St. Nectaire is the perfect cheese. It goes extremely well with many things including fruits, raw vegetables, olives, bread and salami. For an additional 10% off the cheese purchase wines that pair well with the St. Nectaire such as Rutz Pinot Noir or Turnbull Sauvignon Blanc.
WINE TASTING Friday June 9 - 6-9 p.m. - No Charge
1 - Domaine Houchart - $9 - www.jeromequiot.com
This wine exhibits fruity and floral notes, good structure in the mouthfor a great combination with food. Freshness and good acidity for this dry rose. Domaine Houchart is today owned by Geneviève, the wife of Jérôme Quiot, having been originally acquired by her grand-father. During the period the 1850's, Aurélien Houchart was an energic proprietor and negociant in wine, and created one of the largest domains in Provence. This domain has been farmed since Roman times, when it must have been a "Villa", patrician home of the period, some distance away from the "Via Aurelia". Amongst the friends of Aurélien Houchart was the famous painter Paul Cézanne, who frequently came to visit.
2 - Hayman Hill Pinot Noir - $14
With aromas of red berry fruit, hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and deliciously curing beef, flavors give way to a long, silky finish.
This is just great wine at a great price. Full of darker black cherry flavors, blackberry and spice with a little oak flavor.
Very polished and smooth.
3 - Vincent Morgon Cru Du Beaujolais - $19
A pretty region just south of Burgundy, Beaujolais makes fresh, fruity but sometimes rather simple red wines from the Gamay grape. Quite deep colored. There’s an attractive meaty, spicy edge to the cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose. Savoury, firm palate shows good acidity and some tannin. A satisfying wine that is perfect with food.
4 - Norman Vineyards "The Monster" Zinfandel - $21 - http://www.normanvineyards.com/
This is one of our most asked about "Zins". True to its name, this deep and complex wine has ripe and jammy aromas of raspberry and black fruit, with spicy notes of molasses and licorice. Full-bodied and loaded with berry and chocolate flavors, it has a silky mouth-feel and a lingering finish of tar and pepper. Perfect with roast leg-of-lamb and Asian or Latin cuisine. Be sure to try this one.
Thanks to everyone for their support and comments during the week - we appreciate it.
Please join us.
It is fun, informal and a great way to learn about wine.

100 Point Tasting, Mas de Dumas Gassac, Ruston, Cascina Ballarin, Mary Hill, John Duvall Entity
Greetings from New London -
Thames River Wine & Spirits - 860-443-9463 - 84 Bank Street
Thames River Greenery - 860-443-6817 - 70 State Street
Brie & Bleu - 860-437-2474 - 84 Bank Street
Coming Soon: Import - 60 State Street
Calendar of Events: http://www.thamesriver.com/wine/calendar.html
It's a short week so just a few notes before we list our wines for Friday.
First - Thanks to everyone that attended our latest 100 Point Tasting. The wines were fabulous but I must say that we have a particular soft spot for the Tesseron Lot 29 that was served at the end of the night. 1929 was a VERY good year for cognac.
And thanks to Tom & Amy for taking the party to their house after the official tasting.
ALSO - we were able to get four additional bottles of the 100 point Quilceda Creek - in stock now - first come, first served.
Next - Thanks to everyone that attended our dinner for the "Pfizer Food & Wine Society" led by Dr. Richard Huhn.
And of course thanks to our own Anne Haviland for preparing the food - yummy!
Lunch at the Cafe Du Village in Chester was great. Hosted by the owners of Mas de Dumas Gassac - we were included in a very small group that tasted their wines. Known as the Grand Cru of the Languedoc - we have stocked their wines for sometime. http://www.daumas-gassac.com/
Finally - DINNERS BEGIN IN JUNE - (Maryanne - get your calendar)
The menus & wine are being fined tuned - even as you read this!
Watch the calendar of events for the dates.
This week at Brie and Bleu:
Here is a note from our fair Colleen -
Another great cheese from Connecticut - Brigid's Abbey from Cato Corner Farm usually at $20/lb is $18/lb this week at Brei & Bleu. Brigid's Abbey is produced in a picturesque corner of Connecticut at Cato Corner Farm by mother and son team Elizabeth MacAlister and Mark Gillman. Their most popular offering, it is styled after traditional Trappist monastery cheese. Brigid's Abbey is shaped into a round tomme and aged for 2 to 3 months to allow the flavor and texture to develop. The cheese is a cow's milk with a great flavor. It has hints of hay, caramel, and walnuts. Take an additional 10% off the cheese when paired with with Byron Pinot Noir purchased at Thames River Wine and Spirits.
Cheers,
Colleen

WINE TASTING - This Friday June 2 - 6-9 p.m. - NO CHARGE
1 - Ruston 2002 Sauvignon Blanc - $18 - www.rustonwines.com
This sauvignon blanc is quite rich for a white wine, with aromas and flavors of white flowers, melons, kiwifruit, citrus and cream, and a long, racy finish. great for the price and an excellent food wine.
2 - Cascina Ballarin Langhe Nebbiolo- $18 - http://www.cascinaballarin.it/
This is a big wine. Ever since 1928, when building work began on the house, this family has been working and running the land and cellars.
Each area of production is handled meticulously in person: in the countryside - pruning in the winter, various jobs in the summer, the grape-harvest in the autumn - and in the winery, where the wines are fermented, racked, bottled and packaged.
The vineyards are mainly located in the villages of La Morra and Monforte d'Alba, with the following varietes being grown: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto (and a very limited quantity of cabernet sauvignon). Please try it.
3 - Mary Hill - Wine Makers Blend - $14 - http://www.maryhillwinery.com
Maryhill's Winemaker's Blend, is the follow up to the ever popular and award winning Fort Rock Red. A combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. "A bordeaux with a twist." With an elegant oak background this rich and ruby red wine sparks with chocolate and cherry aromas.
4 - John Duvall Entity - $40 - http://www.oldbridgecellars.com
Entity is an intricately structured wine comprised of rich and vibrant Shiraz fruit. A true reflection of Barossa's soil and climate, the 2004 Entity exhibits deep color and distinctive structure. Intense and elegant, Entity expresses aromas of ripe blackberry, blueberry, and a hint of spice.
John Duval, after 28 years with Penfolds, has launched his inaugural release of ‘Plexus’, under his own label, John Duval Wines. From the 2003 vintage, Plexus is an old vine Barossa Valley blend of Shiraz (46%), Grenache (32%) and Mourvedre (22%).
Duval is one of Australia’s most highly regarded winemakers, overseeing the entire Penfolds range as Chief Winemaker for the period 1986-2002. During this time he was responsible for the making of Grange, taking the marquee to new heights including being awarded Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 1995.

The TWO Most asked questions this week:
1 - Are you still looking for help?
Yes we are still accepting applications for the wine store.
Remember - this is physically demanding work as well as being an exciting environment.
If you think you know someone that might fit in - have them stop by the store and speak to Jim Morrison.
2 -Is the 100 point tasting sold out?
SOLD OUT - there are no seats left for the "100 Point Tasting"
please watch for the next one.

It's no secret that we have been trying to get Celebrity chefs Mario Batali and Lidia Bastianich to come to New London for an event at our stores.
The trouble we have been having is that they are booked WAY out and we are trying to coordinate schedules.
But they like what we are doing and they are interested - So, last Monday the phone rings and it's Mario Batali -
"Hey, what are you guys doing - do ya wanna come down and have lunch with us?"
Mario says that he is with his friends and business partners - Joe and Lidia Bastianich at the Bastianich house in Greenwich
So what can we do? - We go to Greenwich and have lunch at the Bastianich home.
When we get there Mario is already at the grill on the patio. He is tossing a little salt through the air and onto a row of sizzling lamb chops.
The kind with the long "french style" bone attached to make it easy to hold with your fingers.
Lidia is stirring a large pot of risotto and Joe Bastianich gives us a warm greeting by handing us wine glasses right away.
"You have to try these new wines from our vineyard - they just arrived."
The Bastianich family owns a vineyard about an hour and a half north east of Venice.
"Try this - its your new favorite wine" He poured from a bottle of their new Tocai - from across the room Lidia raised her glass and called out "Salute!"
Well, that's how our Monday went - Great food, great wines, new friends - it's the way it should be.
We will serve the Tocai this Friday night - Please join us.

This Week At Brie & Bleu -
The New Menu is here! Look for it starting on Tuesday.
The Featured Cheese this week is choosen based on the weather. Due to the rain that has been falling for the last couple of weeks, the cheese is from England were it seems to rain quite a bit. Red Leicester which is $12/lb is $10 this week. Even though it's called Red Leicester, there isn't any white or purple or yellow Leicester -- all Leicester is red. Red Leicester is a version of cheddar that has a flaky texture. It's a firm cheese, made from cow's milk coloured with annatto. Although Red Leicester can be young or "old, aged anywhere from 4 to 9 months, the young Leicesters at the start of that range will be very mild: they really want at least 6 months to develop a tang. The cheese is great when eaten with fruit. It also makes a good partner for beer or a nice chardonnay. For an additional 10% off the cheese purchase at he same time as Four Vines Naked Chardonnay from Thames River Wine and Spirits.
Thursday - BEER TASTING - SPECIAL ADDITION - May 25 - 5-8 p.m. - NO CHARGE
Bon Voyage Party for George Whitehouse with SPECIAL GUEST - Tim Cotter from The Day Newspaper.
When a young man boards a train and heads out west there usually one or two reasons behind it -
The love of a GOOD woman or the results of a confidential test. However in George's case we can confirm it is the latter.
George began his work with us by carrying a big shovel and following the elephants around the compound - Then he moved up to the small shovel.
Soon, he was selling peanuts and in short order worked his way up to the beer division. We will miss him.
Please Join us to bid a fond farewell & safe travels to him -
Great beer and a special selection of GW's favorite music - The "Captain & Tennille.
1 - Names like Franziskaner need no further introduction to most Europeans. They are at the absolute top of German brands and have been there for literally hundreds of years. If you are only used to drink "main-stream beer" you should do yourself a favour and try these and you will see why they are something different and the favorite of so many.
2 - Pilsner Urquell - Noted for it’s golden color, soft body imparted by the unique local water, crisp Czech malt character, and bitter Czech Saaz hop finish, Pilsner beer soon was copied all over the world. If you drink Beck's, Budweiser, Miller Lite, Heineken, or many other light golden lagers, chances are you are drinking a beer fashioned after Pilsner Urquell, which means “Pilsner from the original source”.
3 - Sierra Nevada SummerFest - http://www.sierranevada.com/
Incredible smoothness comes from an extra-long lagering period. Lighter in body than our ales but just as complex in character, Summerfest quenches your thirst with big aroma and a tangy hop bite.
4 - Brooklyn Lager - http://www.brooklynbrewery.com/
From the most modest picnics to the country’s finest restaurants, Brooklyn Lager is enjoyed with everything from salads to steaks.Brooklyn Lager is at home with pizza, burgers, Mexican food, roasted chicken, barbecue, fried fish, pork, and Chinese dishes
WINE TASTING - Friday May 26 - 6-9 p.m. - No Charge
1 - Bastianich Tocai Fruliano - $17
This Tocai has a nose that is ripe and powerful, yet fresh and zesty, full of flowers and almonds. The rich, full-bodied flavors ooze pears and melons, tinged with almonds in the long and impressive finish. As Lidia would say - Salute!
2 - Chateau Flaugergues Rosé - $13
Beautiful. Aromas of blackberry and lavender with balanced spice notes. There is some earthiness and interesting smoke nuances as well.
Don’t be fooled by the wines color. There’s some weight and structure here with good fruit intertwined with refreshing crisp acidity.
A summer chiller, enjoy with fresh salmon, light pastas or by itself.
3 - Cantina Fratelli Monte Falco - $18 - http://www.cantinapardi.it/
The Bianco, Rosso and Sagrantino Passito wines produced in the historical winery are marketed all over Umbria, and the most prestigious buyer is the Vatican. Great with food and worth your time to try.
4 - Costozza Cabernet 2003 - $35
"More Bordeaux than Bordeaux" - rated "two glasses" by Gambero Rosso - you must try this wine.
Costozza has been documented as a winemaking center since at least 1250, but archaeological excavations indicate it's possible that wine was being made in the Berici Hills thousands of years earlier. From a place that you probably never heard of this wine is a show stopper. Please give it a try.
Thanks for your support - we really do appreciate it.

Featured Cheese This Week At Brie & Bleu -
We continue the theme of soft cheeses this week with a cheese from Italy - Tallegio. This cheese is also known as “Stracchino” because cheese making was traditionally started after the cows’ descent from high mountain pastures. “Stracche” means tired in the local dialect. This cheese was first made in the Val Tallegio in the 10th and 11th centuries and is currently made in the Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont regions of Italy. The traditional cheese has always been aged in mountain caves. Deep fractures in the rocks of the caves create a cool and humid microclimate favoring the growth of specific microflora on the surface.
The traditional cheese is made from raw milk. It has a thin, soft, slightly crumpled skin with a soft reddish color and patches of gray mold scattered across the surface. It ripens from the outside towards the center mostly due to the action of yeasts and bacteria on the surface. It has a velvety soft texture and yellow color near the rind and dense, white, firmer and chalky texture near the center. The taste is delicate with a hint of acid in the middle, slightly fruity with a hint of nuts. This Italian cheese is buttery and beefy when ripe, tart and salty when young.
Tallegio is usually $11/lb. but can be purcased at a discount of $9/lb this week. For an additional 10% off purchase at the same time with a nice white Pinot Grigio such as Canaletto or a red Barolo such as Luigi Baudana from Thames River Wine and Spirits.
BEER TASTING - Thursday May 18th 5-8 p.m. - NO CHARGE
As you may or may not have heard, Jorge "The Cannibal" Whitehouse is pulling up stakes, and riding the Super Chief all the way to the Wild West at the end of this month. This leaves us with just two beer tastings left in his series.
Also - Mark your calendars for the 25th - Tim Cotter, writer of The Day's on-line beer blog, will be guest of honor, pouring some of his favorites.

Surprisingly thirst quenching, this beer goes wonderfully with many different food styles—or by itself. Prosit! (Cheers!)"

This Week at Brie & Bleu - Featured item:
We return to the west coast for the cheese of the week - Teleme Rice Flour at $15/lb will be $13/lb. The Peluso family’s Teleme is very different from its namesake, which is a brined, Feta-like cheese found in Greece and nearby countries. The origin of the “Rice Flour Teleme” is California. The cheese is so named because the naturally aged cheese has a thin dusting of rice flour on the surface to prevent mold. Peluso also changed the cheese to make it softer and creamier. When the cheese is young, it has a semi-soft texture and tastes like a fruitier version of a young Jack cheese. After several weeks of age, Teleme grows creamier and runny, eventually reaching the nearly liquid stage that delights Teleme lovers. The cheese goes well with pears, apples, grapes or in a grilled cheese with aparargus.
For an additional 10% off - purchase Teleme with Vina Robles Sauvignon Blanc from Thames River Wine & Spirits.
Wine Tasting -Friday May 12th - 6-9 p.m. - No Charge
1 - Hugel Tokay Pinot Gris -$26 - http://www.hugel.com/
A powerful, smooth bouquet with just a touch of over-ripeness, brimming with aromas of pineapple, apricot, honey, licorice root, fresh figs. The wine is mellow, juicy, plump, smooth, fleshy and terribly enticing, with a bewitching aromatic diversity. Enjoy it with lobster, king prawns, crayfish or white meats.
2 - Chateau Saint Sulpice - $14
Chateau Saint Sulpice is a 100-acre estate situated in a village of the same name in the northern section of Entre-Deux-Mers, just south of St. Emilion and 14 miles northeast of Bordeaux. The property is planted mainly with Merlot and is very carefully tended by owner-winemaker Pierre Duberge and his son Christophe. Their cellar was recently modernized to include a battery of stainless steel tanks. Somewhat spicy in aroma and taste, with a soft, ripe flavor. A very approachable red Bordeaux to drink now. Serve with roasts, pizza, grilled vegetables, grilled meats, beef.
3 - Perrin Cotes Du Rhone Rosé - $14 - http://www.perrin-et-fils.com/beaucastel/2005/11/more_about_vins.html
