We want to offer our thanks once again to Mr. Mark Raymond and Frederick Wildman Importers for arranging another outstanding evening with world-renown winemaker Etienne Hugel.

When we say meet the winemaker - we mean it.

Take a peek at last Wednesday's dinner - Susan and Barkley Hendricks (part of New London's cognoscenti) rub elbows with Etienne - thanks to everyone that attended, and for all of the kind words and comments about our dinner series.

Next Dinner Wednesday February 25 - 6 p.m.
German Wine Dinner with Konrad Hahn proprietor of Von Schlenintz Vineyards
Konrad Von Schlenintz
The Hähn family has been in the wine business since 1650. In 1892 Peter Hähn moved to Kobern and started a small winery. In 1956 his grandson Karlheinz Hähn expanded the winery by buying the Freiherr von Schleinitz estate and merged the two keeping the von Schleinitz name.
Von Schlenintz estate
The winery received more and more attention for its quality and achieved a national award in 1979. At that time Konrad Hähn, the son of Karlheinz and now owner of the estate, was already involved with the winemaking and is continuing the devotion to quality started by his father. The quality focus of the winery was confirmed by two additional national awards in 1995 and 2001. Weingut Freiherr von Schleinitz is certainly regarded as a leading winery in the area.

Please join us and meet Konrad Hahn.
We will pouring Von Schlenintz Sekt (Sparkling Riesliing), Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), Trockenbeerenauslese and their very rare Icewine.

Served with a tappas style menu of French Asian Cuisine. $65 plus tax and service.

2 - Jean-Marc Pillot Santenay
"Les Champs Claude" 2005 $46

Jean-Marc Pillot Santenay
Jean-Marc Pillot has recently assumed responsibility for the management of this domaine although his father, Jean, remains by his side rendering advice and valuable assistance in the vineyards. Jean-Marc has instituted several changes at the estate, the most prominent of which is the construction of a new cave.

The subtle, but important, modifications in vinification and elevage now in place under Jean-Marc's direction have driven this domaine to the very top of its class with wines that are intensely fruity, graceful, and precise. The vines in most parcels are between 25 and 50 years old. Traditional viticultural practices are used in the vineyards.

Both Cordon de Royat and Guyot Simple pruning and training systems are employed. Jean-Marc is an adroit winemaker with a recognized gift for using new oak "juste comme il faut", that is to say, "just enough". The pinot noir is completely destemmed before being sent into open top tanks where they undergo a "maceration à froid" (cold maceration) of 5 days at less than 10 C.

Jean-Marc uses both a gentle "remontage" and a "pigeage" three times a day for his reds. He is an advocate of "finale à chaud" and warms the must at the end of fermentation. According to Jean-Marc, this fixes the color in the wine. A beautifully crafted Burgundy from the famed 2005 vintage at a very reasonable price.

3 - Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2004 $110

Montevertine 2
Montevertine is situated in the heart of the Chianti district about halfway between Florence and Siena and lying specifically about 3 kilometers distance from the village of Radda in Chianti. The Montevertine estate was first developed in the 11th century and was purchased by Sergio Manetti in 1967.

The first vintage of Montevertine produced and bottled under the supervision of Signor Manetti was 1971. By 1981, due to Signor Manetti's devotion to the Sangiovese grape, Montevertine left the Chianti Classico consortium, forgoing the Chianti Classico denomination in order to compose wines almost entirely of Sangiovese. The Montevertine estate is now in the hands of Martino Manetti, son of Sergio, who remains dedicated to the style and philosophy of his father.

There are approximately 10 hectares of vineyards at Montevertine planted almost exclusively to the Sangiovese grape. Small amounts of Colorino and Canaiolo are planted to supplement the Sangiovese. Le Pergole Torte is the prestige wine of Montevertine and is not produced every year. This ultimate wine is aged in large barrel for 18 months and then racked into small French barrels for the final stage of its elevage. It is produced exclusively from Sangiovese. After a manual harvest, the wines are fermented in large (150hl) cement cuves for at least 25 days. The malolactic fermentation also occurs in large volume in cement cuves before it is racked into both small (Alliers oak) and large (Slavonian oak) barrels for 18 to 24 months, depending on the cuvée.

The wine is never pumped, all movement of the wine is by gravity, and the wines are bottled without filtration and then held in bottle for at least 4 months prior to first release.

4 - Dominus 2005 $150

Dominus 2005
Wine Advocate -
Robert Parker - December 2007
Rating: 96 Points:

"The 2005 Dominus has come of age, and is one of the strongest efforts they've made. It is possibly the best Dominus since the 2001, and perhaps even the 1997 or 1991.

A beautiful, sweet nose of roasted coffee interwoven with kirsch, black currant, cedar, and spice box emerges from this deep ruby/purple-colored wine. The wine has fabulous intensity, a layered, opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, well-integrated acidity, and a stunningly long finish.

The layering of this wine as it builds incrementally on the palate is something to behold. An outstanding, sexy, ageworthy Dominus, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and last for at least 25 or 30 years."

2 - Domaine La Manarine Cotes Du Rhone 2006 $15

Domaine La ManarineDomaine La Manarine comprises 9.5 hectares of vineyards situated on what is known as the "Le Plan de Dieu".

For generations, this specific terroir has been recognized as unique. Recent research has identified the particular character of the underlying soil: a deep layer consisting of more than 60% hard limestone "galets" (large smooth pebbles). The climate is typically Mediterranean: relatively hot and dry with an average rainfall of between 600 and 800 mm per year.

The rains usually come in the form of thunderstorms in late August which provide the vines with the water necessary to finish the maturation process (which tends to shut down under stressful drought conditions). Grenache Noir is the main grape variety of the region. It performs particularly well on this type of soil and gives wines with more elegance and aroma than is otherwise common. Gilles has recently acquired one hectare of Syrah vines that will enter into the 2002 harvest which will then enable the Manarine wines to bear the appellation: Cotes du Rhone Villages Travaillan

3 - Domaine Monpertuis Cotes Du Rhone 2007 $16

Domaine Monpertuis
The Domaine de Monpertuis has been in the hands of the Jeune family for several generations. Each successor has added bits and pieces of vineyards to the expanding whole of the estate so that the current owner, Paul Jeune, is now the proprietor of the 10 acres of vines that are scattered amongst 32 separate parcels throughout the confines of Chateauneuf du Pape.

Jeune has the remarkable good fortune of having a majority of his vineyards planted to vines between 60 and 110 years of age.

The multiplicity of parcels spread across Chateauneuf imparts a classic character to the wines of Monpertuis, absorbing the nuances of each soil type of the appellation.

4 - Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso 2004 $68

Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso
References in the archives of Montefalco, the beautiful hill town in Umbria, document the presence of the Bea family in this locality as early as 1500. This tiny estate is the classic Italian fattoria, producing wine, raising farm animals for trade and home consumption and working the land to produce olives, fruits and vegetables. To this day, the Bea family raises and produces much of what they consume on a daily basis. Paolo Bea, the senior member of the family at 72 years of age, is the guiding force behind the production of this series of intense and idiosyncratic wines. He is assisted by his two sons, Giuseppe, who farms the vineyards, and Giampiero, who assists in the vinification and is responsible for all commercial aspects of the winery.

Paolo Bea MAPThe entire property encompasses 15 hectares: 5 of which are dedicated to the vineyards, 2 to olives, and the remainder to the fruits, vegetables and grains that are grown. Sagrantino is the predominant grape, covering 60% of the vineyard surface. The remaining 40% is planted to Sangiovese and Montepulciano, with a small parcel planted to several white varieties. The vineyards are cultivated virtually organic.
