No. 209 Kosher-for-Passover Gin

kosher gin

Distillery No. 209 has created a Jewish masterpiece with the only Kosher-for-Passover Gin available in the marketplace or for that matter, in the world.

After some careful changes of botanical make-up and using a Kosher-for Passover certified Sugar Cane spirit from South Africa as the foundation, this offering represents the same style of artisanal Gin we've come to enjoy of No. 209.

Distillery 209 Gin

One of the leaders of the "New Gin Movement" and probably the best. This five-times distilled gin makes classic gin cocktails better and has helped lead a new cocktail revolution. Made on Pier 50 in San Francisco in a beautiful copper still, this is a must-have for any serious home bar.

Naia Verdejo 2008 $14

naia 09This lovely Spanish white comes from the left bank of the Duero River in the growing region of Rueda, where Verdejo has been grown since the Middle Ages.

Bright fruit flavors of grapefruit, lime and kiwi accented by a"pronounced herbaceousness."

We are so happy to have it back - as wine fanatic Jerry Hall says, "just for the halibut!" Let's pan-sear some with a pile of asparagus!

Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir 2007 $26

Beer In Glass 2This pearl of a vineyard blend may be our favorite ever to be produced in America. Actually pretty big for a Pinot, blended carefully by The Man - Josh Jensen.

After studying in Burgundy at Domaine Romanee Conti (!) Josh bought a limestone outcropping in California in the 70's which he thought would be perfectly suited for fussy Pinot plantings.

This was back when Mondavi was making California famous for Cabernet - NOBODY was growing Pinot.
So Mr. Jensen bought these plots of land around Hollister, only problem - there were no ROADS to get to them.

He started his vineyard with long hikes and helicopter drops! 40 years later everybody loves Pinot Noir from California and Josh's wines are still The Gold Standard (we also have single-vineyard Mills '05, Selleck '05 and Jensen '06 for you fanatics).

Les Deux Rives Corbieres Rouge 2008 $10

Beer In Glass 2Every once in a while we rediscover an amazing little wine right under our nose - this full French red has been the same price for 4 years now!

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan - you're right, those are the ultimate varietals of the Rhone, but now we're takin' it down to the hotter Mediterranean Languedoc coast.

Rich, full and packed with ripe berry flavors, "serve slightly cool with grilled meats, poultry or cheeses."
Read: Perfect with charcoal-seared hangar steak from Carlo and Son in East Lyme, roasted chicken thighs with fennel or just put your feet up with rosemary crackers and paper-thin slices of Shropshire Blue cheese from Brie & Bleu.

Venta La Ossa Crianza 2007 $18

venta la ossa"Fozzie Bear Wine" is back! Who can resist the orange dog/bear creature licking grapes featured on the label?

We joke about critter wines, cats and kangaroos are actually the ultimate marketing beasts, but we think Fozzie is the cutest.

Luckily the charm doesn't end with the label - in the bottle is a gorgeous Tempranillo blend from La Mancha, Spain, with touches of Petit Verdot and Merlot.

Creamy cocoa, roasted beet and dark plum with cinnamon - a peppery heavy-hitter, more wine than the little bear would suggest.

Thanks for all of the comments and for your amazing support over the past few weeks.

We have also seen a lot of new faces over at The Greenery - people have been stopping in for lunch, trying the featured cheese, sampling chocolates - people are really getting the hang of it - Lots of people trying "Shropshire Cheese" from last weeks email for the first time, for example.

We are especially happy to welcome a good friend and talented musician to our weekly tasting this Friday. Mark Peele will be performing for all of us during the tasting.

Folks - this is a great night out - please tell your friends and start your Friday night with us.
Enjoy a little wine, some music, then head out for a nice dinner* or maybe over to a friends house for a visit.
Its all good.

Forstreiter Grooner
Forstreiter "Grooner" Gruner Veltliner $12

What a hoot! Straight out of Austria, our friends Monika and Toni brought us this awesome little Gruner.
Just came to Connecticut after flying off the shelves in Manhattan. We love any wine from Niederosterreich, in fact, any screwcap with an Austrian flag gets our attention! A perfect substitue for Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, ready to go with chicken, salads, seafood and spicy cuisines.

La Vielle Ferme Cotes du Ventoux $9

Beer In Glass 2We adore this French table red - from the southern Rhone right near Mount Ventoux.
Seemed like a wonderful addition to the Perrin Brothers' table wines - it ends up, the Perrins make this wine as well! They loved it too and bought the estate.
Grenache-based table red, light cherry and spice, pairs beautifully with sliced beef, roasted vegetables and tomato-based soups.

Mas de Daumas Gassac "Guilhem" $12

Mas de Daumas GassacAnother in the "so nice we poured it twice" category. We can't rave about this enough - a newly imported gem from France's Languedoc.

Winemaker Aime Guilbert is famous for chasing a famous billion-dollar wine conglomerate out of his backyard (name starting with "Mon" and ending with "davi").

One angry sales rep stopped by, took one look at his wines and blurted out "That #$%&-ing peasant!" Turns out, we love #$%&-ing peasant wine. Keep at it! Silky and fine, enjoy with a quality burger and potato gratin.

Aia Vecchia Lagone Toscana
Lagone Toscana$18

This is our newfound "Baby Gaja" - a "SuperTuscan" endowed with Cabernet and Merlot superpowers from the heart of Tuscany.

Who would dare make a Bordeaux blend in the heart of Italy's most famous growing region? Angelo Gaja would, and turns out Brian Larky at Aia Vecchia would too.
We adore this and might buy it all ourselves.
(P.S. Lagone is a third of the price of the Gaja)

CHEESE
CHEESE
CHEESE
Shropshire Blue

shropshire blue cheese

Shropshire Blue is the bright festive cousin of Stilton. It's essentially produced the same way as Stilton, except that annatto is added to the recipe making the interior orange. Shropshire Blue is even more luscious and creamy than Stilton.

The story of this cheese dates back to Scotland during the 1920s. Dennis Biggins, who actually made his living grading Cheshire cheese, created the first wheels of Shropshire Blue. Today, the cheese is produced in Nottinghamshire, England by Richard Rowlett and Billy Kevan at Colston Bassett Dairy. The cheese is aged for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks.

Shropshire Blue pairs excellently with sliced pears, apples, and quince paste. If you're going to snack on this cheese with crackers, I suggest whole wheat crackers to balance out the striking pungency of the cheese. Similar to Stilton, it tastes exquisite with a glass of port.

United We Eat & Drink

Hello from New London,
As always we have what we believe is a beautiful line-up of wines picked out for the Friday tasting. The list is just below a few items of interest.

The
first thing we want to take a look at is our selection of Irish Whiskey - it is SO nice.

The Irish may or may not have invented whiskey (the jury's still out on that), but after a recent tasting of the best the island has to offer, I'm beginning to think they just might have perfected it.
Irish Whiskey3

Jameson 18 Year Old Limited Reserve ($85)

The Midleton distillery produces a lot of standard Jameson whiskey, all of it light and impeccably clean. Those qualities make this 18-year-old version a perfect example of the good things that long, careful aging can do. Notes of dill and toasted coconut in the nose; velvety, sweet, and nutty in the mouth. Delightful.

Knappogue Castle 1995 Single Malt Whiskey ($40)
This whiskey shows a translucent, floral malt flavor with more citrus than grain: drinking it is like drinking lemon pound cake, in a good way.

Midleton Very Rare 2008 Vintage ($134)
A blend of several very old whiskeys (some of which have as many as 25 years on them), with some younger ones folded in for sprightliness. More complex than the Jameson 18-year-old and particularly pleasant because of the way the bright, citrus peel notes of the younger whiskeys intertwine with the musky-sweet, orange blossom honey notes of the older ones.

Bushmills 10 Year Old Single Malt Whiskey ($34)
My favorite of the Bushmills single malts-indeed, of the entire tasting-happened to be the venerable Northern Ireland distillery's youngest. Lively, fresh acidity lies atop a cushion of barley sweetness: the quintessence of "moreishness". If you like a darker whiskey, you might prefer the chocolatey 16-year-old or the spicy, leathery 21-year-old.

A reminder that our Spring & Easter collection of Moonstruck Chocolate arrives this week.
A perfect gift or maybe just a personal indulgence.

Domaine de Ballade Sauvignon Blanc $10

delas
Another little treasure from Gascony on France's northern Atlantic coast. Has the price of Sancerre and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc gotten to you too? Here's is a lovely substitute - white flowers and lemon with a marvelous round finish. Crisp, clear and exquisitely made, a wonderful match for seafood and salads. This weekend I'm going to fry up some cod with an arugula salad...plus a couple bottles of Ballade = dinner party!

Delas Cotes-du-Ventoux $12

Welcome back old friend! From the East bank of the Rhône river at the foot of the Ventoux mountain range. The Grenache grapes undergo traditional winemaking in stainless steel vats. The Syrah, on the other hand, is vinified in successive batches as soon as it is picked, to preserve the aromas and fruit. Deep ruby red with berry-fruit bouquet and flavors. Gorgeous French red with an impeccable lineage, still so affordable, it's silly...

Landi Lacrima di Morro di'Alba $20

Lacrima Wine png
100% Lacrima from San Marcello in the Italian province of Ancona - right on the "calf" of the Italian boot on the Adriatic coast.

This local grape has been grown in the same region since the 10th century. Ruby red color with a floral scent of rosehips and spice.

An elegant, lighter cherry-blossom wine, a good substitute for Pinot Noir. We fell in love with its graceful wild rasberry tones.

Exactly why we have the tasting - try something you may never have heard of!

sedara

Donnafugata Nero d'Avola "Sedara" $16

A spicy, silky red of the Sicilian "Nero d'Avola" varietal (we will never run out of local Italian varietals folks, there are thousands).

Since I'm hungry, let's get the winemaker's recommendations:

"Try the wine with lightly cooked fresh tuna. Tonno con polenta (tuna with cornmeal). Cannelloni ai pistilli di zafferano farciti al fegato grasso (pasta tubes flavored with saffron and stuffed with foie gras). "Farsu magru" the traditional meat roll stuffed with eggs, ham, cheese and herbs).

Serve: In goblets of medium size." We would do well to abide by these instructions!

Thanks for turning out last Friday for our music & tasting in the cellar. And our thanks also to DJ Dave Freeberg for showing us that real vinyl really does "taste better."

And of course we hope to see you at this weeks tasting.

The people of Iceland know how to party - it's part of their DNA. Every weekend in Reykjavik a couple of thousand people spill out of the night clubs and bars surrounding the main plaza in front of the Hotel Borg to catch their breath and watch as the sun rises over the harbor - it is really something to witness. NOW - who supplies the "Back Beat" for all of this fun? It's the Super Star DJ's like Dave Freeburg, that's who.

DJ Dave Freeburg
This Friday night we welcome back -
DJ Sir Round Sound.

Fresh from his winter tour of Iceland, we are proud to have our favorite beknighted disc-jockey back home!

Perhaps you were here for our Champagne tasting in December? Then you may remember his immaculate spinnings of vintage soul and funk 45's.

Dave will be back in our cellar making noise with his SERIOUSLY fine vinyl.

What a nice way to kick off the weekend - yes?

Palagetto Vernaccia $16

Palagetto VernacciaVernaccia di San Gimignano We love this glossy white from Tuscany!

Chardonnay lovers take note: subtle almond flavors with a long honey and wildflower finish. Soft mouth feel, yet crisp and clean - pair with mushroom risotto, butter-seared scallops, halibut or cod. Lobster with new potatoes and peas?

Pietra Majella Montepulciano $8

Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, dry, smooth with a spicy finish. The fruit is underlying and subtle, not punchy as many other Montepulcianos. Perfect with a big plate of linguine and red sauce.

"Fausto" Rosso Piceno $10

60% Montepulciano, 40% Sangiovese from the Marche region in Northeastern Italy. A remarkable value from an ancient but now obscure growing region. Scents of violets and wild cherry with a touch of smoke. Lush, with wildberry fruit, perfect matched with grilled meats. From an organic family vineyard!

Chateau Teyssier Saint-Emilion $20
Chateau Teyssier

Grand Cru Bordeaux at this price?!
The '05 and '06 sold out and we snagged the rest of the 2004 vintage. We're passing the bargain on to you!
We think 2004 in France was an overlooked gem - not overblown fruit, but fine with silky tannins and beautiful detail.
Did we mention Grand Cru?
Chateau Teyssier has been making wine since before Napoleon, old-vine Merlot and Cabernet Franc - drinking beautifully now.
But when we see it again it will be twice the price.

Lots of mail this last week - thank you we love the feed back.

One thing that stands out from all of the mail was the generally positive comments that Brie & Bleu now has its very own test kitchen - in the form of Thames River Beanery lunch specials.

Sure, it's all confusing, sure its never a dull moment - and yes - we do have a "Hybred Model" that may be hard for some to keep straight - "Your always moving things around" is a very frequent comment.

But the important thing is this: Lunchtime has never been so exciting around here. If you want a peek at the ideas, menus, and events that we are planning -
just come to 70 State Street between 11:30 & 2:00.

And of course we hope to see you at this weeks tasting.

The Magical Way To Start Your Weekend.

Friday evening in France - brought to you by TRW&S. We've got a serious bunch of reds in the works but first, let's shake the week off with a touch of bubbly, non?

Comte de Gascogne Sparkling $12

This is a new wine for us that we can't keep on the shelf. From France's Atlantic coast comes this lyrical Blancs de Blancs. 100% Chardonnay, vinted in Methode Champenoise, crisp citrus with a toasty brioche finish.
A Champagne-like sparkler that you can afford to keep in the fridge for surprise occasions or even Sunday mimosas!

Now - On To The Show...

Paul Jeune
The Wines of Paul Jeune - The Domaine de Monpertuis has been in the hands of the Jeune family for several generations. Each successor has added bits and pieces of vineyards to the expanding whole of the estate so that the current owner, Paul Jeune, is now the proprietor of 10 acres of vines that are scattered amongst 32 separate parcels throughout the confines of Chateauneuf du Pape. This Friday we are proud to share three of his reds. We're so familiar with the first two Cotes-du-Rhones, we figured we should really A-B-C them with their flagship Chateauneuf-du-Pape! This is going to be fun...

Domaine La Manarine Cotes du Rhone 2007 $15

This is a 100% Grenache Noir red made by the talented young winemaker Gilles Gasq, an apprentice of Paul Jeune at Domaine Montpertuis. This "petite" domaine was created by Gilles in April 2001 at the urging of his mentor - after working at Montpertuis for years, Gilles mentioned that his family grew a plot of Grenache on a splendid plateau northeast of Orange which they sold off to winemakers for blending. Paul Jeune inspected the vineyards and declared they should be bottling their own wine!

Domaine Monpertuis Cotes du Rhone
"Vignoble de la Ramiere" 2008 $16

Hand-harvested from vineyards just across the river from Chateauneuf du Pape, this wine is built on the back of Grenache and carries the subtle spice and sophisticated structure of this noble grape. Highly aromatic with the bramble of the garrigue, the fruit is sweet and the tannins are grainy. A classic expression of the tenacious and satisfying wines that have made the formidable reputation of this zone.

Domaine Monpertuis Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 $50

A brilliant wine that displays a grace and finesse that tames its inherent power, the product of a rigorous selection from a series of small parcels in the heart of Chateauneuf du Pape. Paul Jeune has the confidence, the talent, and the superbly sited vineyards to permit each vintage to express its character. Gorgeous and approachable for a young Chateauneuf, with a remarkable ability to age and develop. Silky and fine with a stunning elegance that gives expression to plum-like fruit and spice-driven flavors. Outstanding. We're going to crack a single bottle at 6pm so get here early!
Luck Of The Irish!

Adrahan Cheese
Expert Cheese Maker
Mary Burns

If your not at all familiar with Irish cheeses, you will be quite pleased with the Ardrahan.

A semi-firm, cow's-milk cheese made in County Cork by cheesemaker Mary Burns, Ardrahan was born out of a desire of Mary and her family to eat higher-quality dairy products.

The lush pasture land of Kanturk in Duhallow, Co Cork is a region well noted for its quality grass and clean environment. This is the land where the herd of cows that produce the milk for Ardrahan dairy products, graze happily. And the cheese made from the milk, Ardrahan Farmhouse Cheese reflects that unique flavor.

A type of semi-soft cheese with a pungent aroma, Ardrahan has a buttery textured honey-colored center with a complex delicate flavor that lingers, leaving a very pleasant after-taste.

It has a washed rind, which grows into a golden color, and its size and weight tend to vary slightly due to the fact that it is a hand-made product.

Ardrahan Farmhouse is "great with anything remotely alcoholic," the Burns family recommends a full-bodied Shiraz, Sancerre or Port. Of course, Irish whiskey would be a natural pairing as well - we have them all - Happy St. Patty's Day!

More Irish Cheese
In Stock:

Cashel Blue:
This wonderful farmhouse blue cheese hails from Tipperary. Using only fresh cows milk from their fresian herd, Louis and Jane Grubb have produced this masterpiece. Ideal for melting or after dinner with some port. (8 oz.)

Dubliner tastes of a mature Cheddar, with the sweet aftertaste of Reggiano. Created by the Irish company Kerrygold and named after Ireland's capital city, this cheese shares traits with several well-known cheeses, but the combination creates a flavor that is completely unique. (8 oz.)

Cahill Farm Cheddar with Porter Ale is a visually intriguing cheese. Mixed with dark porter ale during the cheesemaking process, this cheese has a marbled effect with dark brown veins. Imported from Ireland, it has a surprising meaty flavor and is obviously a perfect match for ale. (8 oz.)
